Malaysia 2023 EV Sales increase 286% compare to 2022

In 2023, Malaysia saw a significant increase in electric vehicle (EV) sales. The total number of EVs sold was 10,159 units, which represented a 286% jump over the 2,631 units of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) sold in 2022. This growth in EV sales reflects the evolving automotive landscape in Malaysia.

The best-selling electric vehicle brand in the country was BYD, with 3,728 units sold, marginally surpassing its market rival BMW, which sold 3,600 electric vehicles that year.

The Malaysian government is also supporting this shift towards electric vehicles by increasing the number of EV charging stations across the country.

As of October 2023, there were 1,430 EV charging pointsin operation across 620 locations in Malaysia. This includes 1,127 AC charging points and 303 DC fast charging points. The Malaysian government had set a target to have 10,000 EV charging points in place across the country by 2025. However, this target is currently under review. The number of charging stations is expected to increase significantly in the coming years to support the growing number of electric vehicles in the country.
